Congratulations for what?

Today is the release of cards and grades. The tops students and their awards will also be known today.

Neya's mom goes to school to get the cards. We are both anxious with how Neya will fare. You see, Neya has been excelling in her class in the previous quarters. But this quarter, her test scores are taking a dip. I wouldn't be surprised because Neya has been complaining how difficult the subjects have become. The Math problems seems suitable for grade 6, the English lesson includes correct editing techniques and the Science assignments are similar to my Med School exams. Yeah, I'm exaggerating. But you get the point. She is still in Grade 2.

When we got Neya's grade, she made it to the top again. Wahoo. So, I told my daughter, "Congratulations."

She asked, "For what?"

Should I congratulate her for excelling in class? Does that mean I will not congratulate her if she did not make it on top?

"Congratulations! For doing your best in school. You did your best in school, right?"

"Yes, po."

"That makes Mom and Dad happy. Doing your best in school. We are proud of you. And look, your effort comes with a bonus. You got a Gold Certificate."

Then her Mom gives her a special gift that Neya always wanted. A Barbie magazine. Two of them.

And her face lit with a smile.

Huwarang Bata

Neya was chosen to be a "Huwarang Bata" in her school for her exemplary cleanliness. The school officials hopes Neya and her fellow Huwarang Bata inspire other students to exemplify good values of respect, helpfulness, cleanliness, obedience and perseverance. Proud of my daughter to be a role model at such an early age.
